Joan Shigekawa, senior deputy chairwoman, National Endowment for the Arts, recently announced that the Center for Modern Dance Education of Hackensack was one of 150 not-for-profit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Challenge America Fast-Track grant. CMDE was awarded a $10,000 grant to support the presentation of the evening-length work Echoes In Time, tracing the history of American tap dance through the recreation of iconic choreography and related tap workshops and featuring award-winning tap artist Andrew Nemr and his company, Cats Paying Dues.

“I am thrilled, delighted and proud that CMDE has received this grant,” said Elissa Machlin-Lockwood, the center’s artistic director. “I have worked with Andrew Nemr in the past and respect and admire him and his work. I believe this will add a new kind of diversity to our CMDE programming.”
