Paterson girls now know the pitfalls to avoid when it comes to spending their hard-earned dollars thanks to a special program from the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey.
As part of the Earn Your Future program run by PwC, Celebrate Girls learned about budgeting and spending money during their summer camp program.
Led by a team of 10 PwC staff, the 9- to 11-year-old girls were taught individually how to set up a budget, how to plan for expenses, how to save for future purchases, and how to fund their future dreams of owning a home, going to college, or buying a car.
“I learned a lot about how to budget and plan how to spend my money. I also learned to avoid buying unnecessary things,” said Fatima, one of the girls who participated in the program.
PwC has partnered with Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey to provide financial literacy activities at the Celebrate Girls Summer Program in Paterson, one of several summer programs run by Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey. PwC provides the Earn Your Future program to various groups in order to help improve the financial competency and education of the nation’s youth.
Girls were asked to decide what they would like to purchase in the future and looked at real life scenarios about a person’s income. As part of the activity, girls were taught how to cut expenses in order to save for long-term future purchases, such as a home.
“Financial literacy is an important topic that needs to be taught to the nation’s youth. We are grateful for the partnership with PwC, which enables us to provide activities to girls that will teach them skills they will need throughout their lives,” said Betty Garger, president/chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey.
Celebrate Girls Summer Program is run by Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey for eight weeks during July and August. Girls can participate in sports activities, Girl Scout badge activities, or STEM or financial literacy activities.
