Hackensack Increases Trash Collection

Beginning on March 17, Hackensack will increase garbage collection throughout the entire city to two times per week.  Last summer, the city council launched a successful pilot program in which the twice weekly garbage collection was made available to residents of Hackensack’s First Ward.

Art Koster, personnel director, explained that the change was implemented citywide because residents made a request to the council.

“We are actually going back to the way it was about 12, 13 years ago,” Koster said. “We are anticipating that this will be at no additional cost to the city, as we have changed the routes to accommodate the extra pick-up day instead of adding additional ones.”

Koster also said that the city expects the current (both full-time and temporary) department of public works staff can handle the extra collection day workload without having to hire more employees.

South side (recycling routes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) garbage will be collected on Mondays and Thursdays.  North side (recycling routes 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10) garbage will be collected on Tuesdays and Fridays. For more information, call the Hackensack Department of Public Works at 201-646-3950. There will be no change to the current recycling and rubbish collection schedule.
