The 18th annual Bergen County Consumer Bowl competition was held March 14at the county administration building in Hackensack.
The Consumer Bowl tests students’ knowledge of consumer protection laws and regulations. It is conducted in a game show format with high school teams competing against each other.
Questions were asked about a number of topics including state of emergency price increases, weights and measures, pump and dump, boiler room, reload scams, frequency of changing gas prices, rent to own, credit reports, small claims court, skimmers, social Web sites, pets, identity theft, health clubs, new and used car lemon laws, Consumer Product Safety Commission, auctions, foreclosures, smishing, slamming, furniture, medical records and phishing.
Team members Christopher Balasa (captain), Angy Ahmed, Margo Abdulahad, Heidi Ahmed and Kelly Huie performed extremely well. The team is led by Valerie Gancarz of the Business Education Department.
