Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation Holds 6th Annual Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial Run

Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial Run with Zabranskys and Dr(SADDLE RIVER, NJ) Under sunny skies and with more than 600 enthusiastic participants, the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation recently held the 6th Annual Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial 5K Run, in Saddle River.

The 5K event, which each year honors the life and memory of Susan Zabransky Hughes, raises funds to benefit patients and programs affiliated with Hackensack Meridian Health Hackensack University Medical Center.   Susan, who was a resident of Saddle River, lost her battle with cervical cancer in July 2011 at the age of 46.

“This event is such an amazing tribute to my daughter, for which she is remembered for her devotion, passion and compassion,” said Susan Zabransky, mother of Susan Zabransky Hughes. “I’d like to thank the Run for Sue Committee and the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation for their efforts in putting together yet another spectacular and very meaningful event.”

“This event is a special part of Sue’s legacy,” said Ihor S. Sawczuk, M.D., president of Hackensack Meridian Health Hackensack University Medical Center. “It brings together a generous community in a way that benefits many. Since its inception, including gifts from the Hughes and Zabransky families, the Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial Run has raised more than $2 million.”

The day began with a USATF certified 5K family run/walk sponsored by the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation and the Run for Sue Committee.  Susan’s family, led by her parents,

Susan and Bill Zabransky, along with many friends, established the Committee.  Dedicated donors have helped to complete Susan’s Suite, a 10-bed unit for patients with cancer and diseases of the immune system, treated in the Emergency and Trauma Center at Hackensack University Medical Center.

The Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation and the Run for Sue Committee continue to fund an endowed memorial scholarship, which helps to support the education of a promising medical student at the Seton Hall-Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.

Funding also continues for two weeks of camp at Pony Power Therapies in Mahwah for patients treated at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center.  The equine therapy program offers pediatric patients and related families opportunities to engage in activities related to horses and the farm.
