Mall Shooter Found Dead

At approximately 9:19 p.m. last night, a 20-year-old Teaneck man, now identified as Richard Shoop, entered the Westfield Garden State Plaza mall in Paramus and fired several shots. Fortunately, no one was injured as the bullets struck an elevator and an escalator. Dressed in black and possibly a motorcycle helmet, Shoop then went into hiding.

After a six-hour manhunt by hundreds of police and emergency personnel who searching the mall, Shoop was finally found in a storage area at 3:20 a.m. with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The Garden State Plaza remains closed as the weapon has not yet been recovered.

Officials suspect that Shoop was under the influence of drugs. According to Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli, the gun, a Sig Sauer rifle, was stolen from Shoop’s brother who had legally obtained it. The gun was modified to appear like an AK-47.
