The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Maywood Police Department are searching for the suspects responsible for setting two garages ablaze on Maywood early Sunday.
At approximately 5:30 a.m., the Maywood Police Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting an explosion and fire in a detached garage of an apartment complex located at 5 Hammell Place. It turned out that the explosion heard by the 9-1-1 caller was simply the result of the fire, not the cause of it. It was determined that someone had intentionally lit the fire, which then caused several containers kept in the garage to explode.
While fighting the fire on Hammell Place, firefighters were called to 8 Windsor Court. They found a fire in a garage underneath the apartment building. The fire destroyed one vehicle and caused damage to others. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Squad conducted an investigation and both fires were determined to be cases of arson.
Anyone with information regarding these fires is encouraged to contact the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office anonymous tip line at 201-226-5532 or the Maywood Police Department at 201-845-8800.
