No Police Injured in Hackensack Shooting; Suspect in Critical Condition

Police officers and concerned residents on the scene this morning in Hackensack, following the shooting.

At approximately 1:00 a.m. this morning, Hackensack Police received a call reporting a male party in possession of a handgun at Railroad Avenue and Newman Street, by the housing projects, Hackensack Police Director Michael Mordaga said. When police arrived on the scene, the man was walking in between the buildings and he attempted to flee by foot.

He then opened fire on two officers. “One of the bullets hit the front of a police car and another went through the windshield, which almost struck an officer,” Mordaga explained. Two additional officers arrived on the scene and all four officers returned fired. The suspect was hit multiple times and came to rest at the corner of First Street and Sussex Street.

The suspect has been identified as Robert Leonardis, 22, of Hackensack, according to a press release posted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. He is currently at Hackensack University Medical Center and listed in critical condition. The four officers involved in the shooting were also taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where they were examined and released.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office reported that a .45 caliber handgun was recovered at the scene.
