Paramus Police Use DNA to Find Burglary Suspect

derekedwards-2The Paramus Police Department announces the arrest of Derek Edwards, 50 yoa, of Teaneck NJ, for a residential burglary that occurred on June 23, 2015.

On June 23, 2015 the Paramus Police responded to a Sycamore Street residence to investigate a home burglary. The arriving officers found that the suspect had entered the home through a side door of the house sometime between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm, while the residents were out of the dwelling.

Paramus Police Detective Chris Zuck and Detective Robert Brack, of the Bureau of Criminal Identification (Crime Scene Unit) processed the crime scene. They were able to locate DNA evidence in the home. This evidence was sent to the New Jersey State Police Crime Lab for processing. Last week the DNA, was found in CODIS, which is the acronym for the Combined DNA Index System, to match that of Derek Edwards, a known burglar.

Based on this evidence Edwards was charged with the burglary. He was arrested and processed at the Bergen County Jail where he is incarcerated on unrelated charges. His bail was set at $150,000. The defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
