At approximately 6 a.m. on Feb. 14, the Paramus Police Department responded to a burglar alarm activated at the Jewelry Center on Route 4 West. The glass doors on the west side of the building were smashed, and police determined that the suspects had backed a pickup truck through the glass doors, attaching one end of a steel cable to the truck and the other end to a safe located inside. The thieves used the pickup truck to pull the safe out of the building into the parking lot and used a small backhoe to load the safe into another unknown vehicle that fled the scene. The pickup truck and backhoe were both abandoned at the scene.
It was reported that the safe contained up to $250,000 worth of jewelry. The Ford F350 pickup truck had been reported stolen earlier in Essex County, while the backhoe was stolen from a Route 17 construction site in Paramus. The case is still under investigation by Paramus police and anyone with information about the incident is advised to contact the department at 201-262-3400, ext. 553.
