At approximately 5:15 p.m. on March 18, Maywood police officers were dispatched to West Pleasant Avenue near the post office on a report of a man being robbed. Witnesses at the scene said a young man knocked the victim to the ground, attempted to grab a bag he was carrying, rifled through his pockets, then ran to a vehicle and fled the scene. Witnesses memorized the license plate number, which was broadcast by Maywood police to neighboring forces along with physical descriptions of the car’s three occupants. The vehicle was stopped by Franklin Lakes and Ringwood police on Skyline Drive in Ringwood.
Upon interviewing the victim at Maywood police headquarters, detectives learned that he and his attackers came to Maywood together in an attempt to obtain prescription drugs.
The victim, identified as Roland Brown, was paid by the other three to obtain prescription medications from a pharmacy on West Pleasant Avenue. When the prescription was denied, one of the men, identified as Austin Demarest, 18, confronted Brown on West Pleasant Avenue and forcibly attempted to retrieve the money he had been paid, police said.
Demarest, of West Milford, was arrested and charged with robbery and attempt to obtain prescriptions fraudulently. Demarest’s passengers, Joshua Walker, 18, and Matthew Florman, 25, both of West Milford, were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and attempt to obtain prescriptions fraudulently.
Brown, 56, of Carlstadt, was also arrested and charged with attempt to obtain prescriptions fraudulently and attempt to distribute drugs.
