The New Jersey Department of Transportation is carrying out a railroad crossing repair project that will require the temporary closure of Union Street next week in Hackensack.
Union Street is scheduled to be closed to traffic in both directions at the freight rail crossing from 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 14 until approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18. Traffic will be detoured using Central Avenue, Railroad Avenue, Gamewell Street, Trinity Place and State Street.
Access will be maintained to residential properties and businesses on either side of the rail line. If the work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.
In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossings in Hackensack, the freight rail contractor will replace the existing crossing with a new full depth concrete panel rail crossing system, install new tracks and repave the asphalt approaches. This project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades or removes approximately 30 crossings each year statewide.
