Sheriff’s Officer Discovers Heroin Stash

At approximately 11:40 a.m. Saturday, Bergen County Sheriff’s Officer Krzysztof Wojtylo was serving court papers in Garfield when he observed a motorist traveling south on Shaw Street toward Lanza Avenue.  After failing to give the right of way to oncoming traffic, the driver turned left on Lanza, cutting off several vehicles.  Wojtylo then saw the motorist turn left onto Madeline Avenue, a one-way street going east.

As Wojtylo, approached the vehicle and began to advise the driver, identified as Daniel MacTaggart of Lodi, of his violations, he noticed that he was very nervous and breathing shallowly.  MacTaggart then consented both verbally and in writing to allow the officer to search his vehicle.

In the trunk, officers discovered two bricks of heroin wrapped in newspaper and two stacks of envelopes wrapped with a rubber band. Detectives recovered a total of 120 envelopes of heroin and $844 in cash.

MacTaggart was arrested and charged with drug possession and distribution, reports said.

“I commend the diligence and attentiveness that Officer Wojtylo displayed,” said Sheriff Michael Saudino.  “These incidents highlight the dangers that officers encounter every day.  I am proud of Officer Wojtylo’s commitment to service resulting in the removal of these dangerous drugs from the streets of Bergen County.”
