At approximately 12:50 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, Paramus police received a 9-1-1 call from a 34-year-old woman requesting help. The Ridgefield Park woman explained that she had just returned to her car in Garden State Plaza mall’s south parking lot near Best Buy when two young men opened her unlocked car doors and attempted to pull her out of the vehicle. She said one of the men grabbed her car keys from her hand as she continued to struggle with the suspects. They eventually fled the scene, running east toward a residential neighborhood.
Paramus Police Officer Kurt Massey, who was on Plaza Way, responded to the incident and spotted the suspects fleeing the scene. The two men separated and ran to the backyards on Fairfield Drive where Massey apprehended one of them. Massey was assisted by Paramus Officers Todd Colaianni and Jonathan Henderson.
With the assistance of the Rochelle Park and Maywood Police Departments, a perimeter was established around the neighborhood, and, a short time later, officers arrested the second suspect in a backyard on Cloverdale Road.
The suspects, two 16-year-olds from Passaic, were charged with carjacking and resisting arrest and were transported to the Bergen County Juvenile Detention Center in Teterboro pending court action.
