The HealingSPACE at the YWCA of Bergen County (formerly the YWCA Rape Crisis Center) hosted its 20th annual Clothesline Project on the historic Hackensack Green outside the Bergen County Court House on Sept. 18. The powerful exhibit offered victims and survivors of violent crime a way to express themselves by designing artwork and writing inspirational phrases on T-shirts. Project participants included women, women and children who have survived personal violence such as sexual assault or harassment, child abuse or domestic violence as well as the families of those who have lost their lives tragically.

Amid a sea of 1,800 T-shirts on display, guest speakers including Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan offered some words of encouragement to victims of crime and their families. The day also included various performances, food vendors and the opportunity for guests to create their own T-shirt in support of the anti-violence effort.
