1776After a sold out run of its Summer Stage production, My Name is Asher Lev, Palisades Players is back at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades to present the multiple award-winning political comedy, 1776, which will entertain audiences with this fascinating suspense story about how John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson singlehandedly convinced a disparate group of cranky congressmen from all the loyalist states to vote “yes” for independence from England. The show won the Tony for best musical in 1969, with its superb music & lyrics by Sherman Edwards and the book by Peter Stone.

The director is Nancy Ringham whose many Broadway film and TV credits include Polly in the Threepenny Opera opposite Sting, Eliza in My Fair Lady opposite Rex Harrison, Follies with Judith Ivey, Blythe Danner and Treat Williams. She also played leads in Cabaret, Oklahoma, Guys and Dolls and Singin’ In the Rain on National Tours. Her experience and vision is creating a mischievously humorous 1776, full of excitement and energy.

The cast of 23 includes professionals who have been featured in 1776 in prestigious Regional theaters. Philip Callen played the Congressman from Georgia at the famous Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis,  In this production, he plays the all-important  Benjamin Franklin, a role that features his exceptional lyric baritone.  Doug Chitel who plays John Adams, the leading force for rebellion, comes to us by way of many leading roles in New York City and LA, including Phantom of the Opera at Musical Theater West (LA), Susan Vardy, a professional from Tenafly, with many NYC credits, plays Abigail Adams.  The cast also includes highly talented actors from our area, Deborah Murad, Julian Millstein, Chris Caramelli, Judy Rosenthal, Jay Greenspan, Dori Persson, and some new and exciting talents from New Jersey, Westchester and  New York City: J.R.
